The show went beautifully. The Soular System was the
opener, and you will hear their new album soon, Produced
by Danny Bedrosian and featuring himself and BOOGIE.
Secret Army hit the stage and delivered a two and a half
hour scorcher of NASTINESS.
The SETLIST WAS AS FOLLOWS:
1) COP THIS (Som'n Fierce)
Lige rollicking Bass solo
BlackByrd scorching Guitar Solo
Driving mid tempo funk groove-need I say more?
2) THE BATTLE FOR SOPHENE
This is one of the FONKIEST tracks on the upcoming SECRET ARMY album. Crazy time changes too, with an
Organ/Synth solo from Danny B. and another slammer solo from Byrd.
3) BUSY SIGNALS
The opening track from the upcoming SECRET ARMY album. Another fusion inflected synth solo from Bedrosian, and a ridiculous Johan S.
Bach meets Jeff Beck feel for real, Byrd is playing some beautiful trills on this one.
One of the finest songs from the upcoming SECRET ARMY album, with Lige going all the way into Jamerson mode. This song also features a
very Baroque moment in the middle, backup vocals, and classical piano mixed with Clintonesque woolybully vocals, and a gospel feel too.
Motown/Classical/Church vibe with the FONK.
5) GOOD OLD MUSIC
The Parliaments version! With the great Tiki Drum intro, and Byrd taking a nasty Guitar solo at the end. Gutbucket funky doowop for real.
6) SOUL MATE
Even though this song is covered on Som'n Fierce, the Secret Army band did the original much faster Hardcore Jollies version- Exactly LIKE
7) TUNE FOR THE TOONS
From the Upcoming Secret Army album, Hip Hop/Pfunk feel, with Steve Boyd Jr, delivering some vicious rhymes, complete with boisterous Lige
bass solo even quoting the Humpty Dance/Bounce to this swoop in the arrangement, and the baddest Blackbyrd solo of the night; intense,
technically and artistically. The song ends with Teresa Jimenez in a jazz/operatic vein, singing along to a pop/protoclassical movement and
ending with an abrupt Zappaesque riff.
The opening track on Som'n Fierce, came out funky as hell with Danny and Lige doubling the octave jumps; the original version of this song
was just made into a music video that will be available with footage from this very show as well as interviews: pay close attention, its due out
early in the summer.
9) STUPIFYING TIMES
The gospel/folk ballad that is featured on the upcoming SECRET ARMY album, with great vocals, and moving changes and arrangement
placement. Both churchy and solemn, without being to over the top in either.
10) SHAKE STOOPID
One of the highlights of the night, every member took a solo, and they are all nasty as ####! Marc Munoz, Lige,Mike Maloney,Blackbyrd,Danny,
Seth Ceders, and some jazzy Parliamentesque lead lines and rhythms. Showmanship to the max too, with Byrd soloing FOR REAL with his
teeth, and Danny dropping to the floor using his knees for his pedals and literally lifting the whole keyboard off the stand and thrashing it
around during his solo. Danny's solo style is very much what he likes to call "TERRORBOARDIST" style. You will see on the upcoming DVD.
The song ends with an epic flourish
12) LONG DIVISION
The soul/sleaze mid tempo tune from SOMN FIERCE album. Great group vocals and tight funky transition into
12) TESTIFY- The Up For the Downstroke version. This was the encore and it went for easily 15 minutes minimum. Went through the verses
twice, and recalled call and response hype with the acapella vocalists and audience chants of the chorus and then calling on Blackbyrd for one
more solo, this time with the Blues on FIRE! This song ended the night appropriately and all who attended were worn out and more than
satisfied with their extra strength Surgeon Generals doses of UNCUT FUNK.
